Junk Culture - Oregon

Just received some exciting news! Junk Culture is finally set to release his debut full-length album, Wild Quiet, on July 31 via Illegal Art! The album strays from his previous sample-heavy releases and takes a quieter, dreamy, more reflective route.
“I just turned 26 a few months ago and on my birthday, I looked in the mirror and discovered all these white hairs in my beard.” - Deepak Mantena
I had to pleaseure to meet Deepak when Junk Culture opened for Phantogram in Columbus at Treebar (formerly known as The Treehouse) in late 2009, the very day I started Jack in the Pocket. Since that evening, I have been hooked on his funky, trippy, and gloriously glitched-out tunes. We met again at Ottobar in Baltimore, MD in 2010 while visiting Jimmy from Headunderwater. There were plans to record a Jack in the Pocket interview (audio footage is still on my phone) however, we were all so focused on catching up over (copious rounds of) drinks, the interview turned into a nonsensical drunken bought of jokes and uproarious laughter, as you can see below.
We’ve just planned to schedule a phone/Skype interview. Can’t wait to discuss the new album, and perhaps share a digital drink or two.

Yesterday, I received my limited edition colored vinyl of Here We Go Magic’s new album, A Different Ship. It is an aqua marbled beauty!

Tonight, one of my all-time favorite style-icons/rock goddesses, St. Vincent’s Annie Clark, will perform at The Newport Music Hall in Columbus, Ohio with guest Shearwater.
This will be her first time headlining in Columbus since her show on February 20, 2010 was cancelled at the very last minute due to PA failure and a huge misunderstanding. That night she tweeted that “next time, you will get a show you deserve, good people.” Annie was obviously heartbroken.
Dudes. I’m so bummed.

I am so excited to finally see this woman wail on her guitar in real life. We have a photo pass for the show, so expect a review tomorrow!
Ms. Clark, you are the epitome of cool. Welcome back to Columbus. See you tonight.

Suckers - Chinese Braille

Today, Suckers’ sophomore album Candy Salad hits record stores! The trio has forged a more polished and cohesive sound with this album, versus the wild and sometimes uneven pace of their 2010 release, Wild Smile. My favorite tracks off of Candy Salad include “Chinese Braille,” “Turn on the Sunshine,” and “Bricks to the Bones.” You can stream the album in it’s entirety here.
Columbus can catch Suckers live at The Basement this Friday, May 4 with Detroit psych-pop band Turn to Crime.
GPOY: So much love for Doldrums!
I have been suffering from a very severe case of wanderlust. So, to temporarily relieve the travel bug, I drove from Columbus to Nashville and Memphis, Tennessee this past weekend. It just so happened that Bear in Heaven, Doldrums, and Blouse were performing in both cities, so I was thrilled to meet up with them again!
Doldrums played a lot of new tracks at the show at Hi-Tone in Memphis on Sunday. Check out my new fave, EGYPT, below, off of their upcoming 12” release. It’s fantastically funky and fresh! Pre-order through Souterrain Transmission before it drops on June 4 here!
The picture above is of Airrick Woodhead (Doldrums) and I outside of the Hi-Tone Cafe just after we danced our faces off, hence the huge smiles and glowing skin.
Koalas + Rock stars = Heartmelts
This is too awesome.
From left to right, top to bottom: Chris Biao (Vampire Weekend), Alison Mosshart & Jamie Hince (The Kills), Annie Clark (St. Vincent), Winston Marshall (Mumford & Sons), Nick Zinner (Yeah Yeah Yeahs), and Daniel Rossen (Grizzly Bear).

White Denim | The Basement | April 18, 2012 | Columbus, OH
I’m having some difficulty attempting to convey the phenomenal power of White Denim’s performance at The Basment last night. They are four of the most skilled musicians I have ever seen. My mind still has trouble comprehending the beautiful complexity of their music. Tempo and key changes from other worlds…
I expected a great show, and what I got was a powerful, inspiring, and brilliant experience. I’m still radiating the energy I absorbed from it!
I agree with Jimmy… White Denim may just be the greatest (and currently the most underrated) band of our generation.
