Columbus gypsy rockers, Maza Blaska recorded a sweet Little Box session with Jack in the Pocket’s partner in crime, Spoonfeed Columbus! Check it out.

Maza Blaska Bandcamp

This track is EASILY one of our favorites off of their new record STORYTELLER, which is available at the link below. “Mississippi” is a bluesy trip through the Mississippi River that Sam, Yoni and the gang serve up on a nice hot plate. When this is live and electric, this song can’t be beat…

Read and see more of Maza Blaska’s Little Box session over at SpoonfeedCbus.

Last week I asked: If you were a stripper… and a hipster… what would you dance to while expertly balancing your large framed RayBan spectacles on your nose as you slide up and down the pole?

Problem solved y’all. Here is a mix of 13 tracks (aptly titled STRIPSTER… get it?) you can provocatively peel off your skinny jeans to while keeping your indie cred.
Here We Go Magic has one of those confounding band names that may seem silly to some. Then, when you spend some time with their music, you begin to understand. It’s the tingle of excitement, the flood of associated memories, and the way their albums stretch your brain that make you think, Here we go… it is magic! I dare you to don a set of high quality headphones, play their debut self-titled album and not notice the how each ethereal layer weaves itself so intricately with the others (Listen to Tunnelvision from Here We Go Magic). Each time I play their sophomore release, Pigeons, I notice a layer or a lyric I had somehow missed before (Listen to Casual from Pigeons). This quartet, led by Luke Temple, really do craft magical melodies. This track from their upcoming 3rd full length album, A Different Ship, is just a taste of more magic to come.

Here We Go Magic’s LP, A Different Ship, will hit stores on May 8th. They haven’t set a full tour schedule yet, however, they will play The Knitting Factory in Brooklyn on April 26 to celebrate A Different Ship’s release.
KAUF - Relocate

If you were a stripper… and a hipster… what would you dance to while expertly balancing your large framed RayBan spectacles on your nose as you slide up and down the pole? This thought crossed my mind about a year ago while listening to some sexy songs on my iPod. If I were an erotic dancer, I sure as hell would not dance to songs like Pour Some Sugar on Me, Dangerzone, etc. So… why not create a mix chock full of songs that would perfectly accompany a hipster strip-tease? The tracks obviously have to have a steady, sultry, bass heavy beat. Lyrics wanton and mysterious… The artist still a treasure to be discovered.

This track from LA’s KAUF surely meets the criteria. I dare you not to sway your hips as this song takes over your ears. Don’t miss his other sexy electro jam When You’re Out.

Look for a special mix from Jack in the Pocket on Valentine’s Day. ;)

After a very successful tour with Bon Iver, Other Lives has secured the coveted role of opening for the North American tour of Radiohead. Their beautiful, haunting music is, as Filter so perfectly states, “perfect for waking up on a crisp fall Sunday or executing a heartrending breakup in the middle of the night.” I’ll pair their album “tamer animals” with a hot cup of tea, a cozy sweater, and a solemn novel this weekend.

Night Beats craft fuzzed out psychedelia reminiscent of the greats from the 60’s and 70’s… The Seeds, 13th Floor Elevators (sans jug). The scruffy Seattle trio share a record label with fellow garage punkers Mikal Cronin and Ty Segall. Sound good, yeah? Then, grab their self-titled debut album, don your best leather jacket, black sunglasses, combat boots, light a cigarette, and curl your lips like Elvis.

Heading to Memphis, TN this weekend and stopping in Nashville on the way. I definitely want to spend some more time digging through the record stores this time through. If any of you have recommendations of where I should stop, shoot me a message or reply to this post. I took this photo at Goner Records when I was in Memphis last September. I’ll most definitely be stopping there again.

Elvis is King.

PS: If you happen to live in Memphis, or plan to visit soon, check out the great theatre going on at Playhouse on the Square. I’ll be seeing fellow tumblr blogger and best friend Kelsey Hopkins as Natalie in the musical Next To Normal this Saturday.

Since I first saw Class Actress open for Small Black a while back, I have been obsessed with the music and drooled over singer Elizabeth Harper’s elegant and edgy style. She has just released her golden new music video for the single “Bienvenue” off of her LP Rapproacher. The video portrays every girl’s dream. Elizabeth wanders the streets of Paris while wearing gorgeous Jean Paul Gautier and Dior pieces, quietly inhabits a chic top floor apartment, and falls in love with a handsome French man. Good lord, what I would give to live that life? Tout le monde. Until then, I’ll be living vicariously through Class Actress.

Bienvenue à Paris, mes chéris.

If you have ever seen Columbus’ favorite band of 2011 live in concert, it’s very likely your face was melted off your skull by their fiery electro-rock tunes. The Town Monster is back and making plans to turn up the heat on 2012. Their first mission of the year: take a monster bite out of hunger. How will they complete this mission? By throwing a rockin’, drunkin’, dancin’, boozin’, food collectin’, fundraisin’, party of epic proportions TOMORROW NIGHT (Friday, January 20) at Skully’s Music Diner. This will make the 3rd Annual Full Belly Food Drive that The Town Monster has hosted with CD 101 at 102.5fm. The line up also includes raucous rock n’ rollers, The George Elliot Underground, Karate Coyote, Phil Cook, and C.J. Townsend. Sounds pretty amazing, right? Well my friend, if you need more convincing, check out Spoonfeed Columbus’ interview with The Town Monster’s drummer and sex cymbal (see what I did there?), Matt Grady.

Interview by Spoonfeed Columbus’ JULIAN SMITH follow him on twitter @DANGERSMITH

Julian Smith: Friday marks the third annual Full Belly Food Drive! Tell me a bit about its history. How did it originate and how has it progressed?

Matt Grady: Our manager, Zach Johnson, originally had the idea to host an annual food drive. Food drives and fundraisers are nothing new in the Columbus music scene, and many bands do a great job when it comes to giving back. The difference with this food drive is that we want to make it bigger each year in terms of how much food is raised and how many people and bands we can get involved with it. We reached out to CD101, now on 102.5 fm, our first year holding the event, and they donated a generous amount of airtime to promote the event and have been a huge help in making each year a success through their sponsorship. Last year we raised over 2,000 lbs of food and we are aiming for 3,000 lbs this year. All proceeds benefit the NNEMAP in the Short North. (It is the church with the butterfly doors on the corner of High St. and E. 3rd)

JS: The Town Monster was arguably Columbus’ most popular band in 2011. Certainly one of its most talked and written about. It seems like it’d be easy for you to blow out a show for the band’s financial gain, but you consistently play free and charitable shows. Why is it so important for TTM to give back to the city its thriving in?

MG: Well, it isn’t just The Town Monster that is giving back. It is everybody that comes out and donates, the bands that play for free, and the radio station donating their resources. As a band, we are simply in a unique situation to organize an event and make it work by bringing together the contacts we’ve made over the last few years.

JS: For those who are living under rocks, what can someone who’s never seen you expect from a Town Monster live set? Do you guys have anything special planned for this show in particular?

MG: You can expect a fair amount of drunkenness, dancing, a lot of energy, screaming. We have quite a few lights that we bring to most shows. Tony Stewart, our dude at Electraplay, has been running lights for us. He knows our music well, recording and producing our first album “Autumn People”. He was around for the Ohio Sessions that we recorded in 2010, and as a result he can sync up the lights to the music pretty well.

JS: What is next for The Town Monster? Any plans for new music or touring?

MG: We do have plans for 2012, but as anybody in a band can tell you, things don’t always work out as planned. With that being said, yes you can expect some new releases and tour dates, but I can’t comment on the details just yet. We think that 2012 will be a good year for us, though.

JS: Give me and all our readers all the important details on Friday’s show. Did you guys pick the line-up yourselves? Did you set a goal for the food drive?

MG: We organized the lineup. The lineup is pretty diverse with rock, hip-hop, electronic, dance. We are playing with our good friends, The George Elliot Underground. They’re a lot of fun and they love to party. I get drunk just watching them drink, it is pretty incredible. Also on the bill is Phil Cook, and Karate Coyote. We were going to have a DJ to close the night, but he had to drop off the bill. We’ve held the event at Skully’s every year. The space is big enough to hold all the people and the food, the sound system is awesome, and John who runs booking at the venue is great to work with. Admission to the event is three or more canned or nonperishable goods and doors open at 8:30 pm. Donors will receive raffle tickets upon entry and drawings will be made throughout the night. The more you donate, the more raffle tickets you receive. Our goal is to have a great time and raise a mountain of food for NNEMAP. — SPNFD

My dear...

Columbus Band, The Floorwalkers Record with Daytrotter!

My dear friends, Columbus’ The Floorwalkers, recorded an amazing session with the ever cool music website, Daytrotter!!! So proud of these guys!

The Floorwalkers, a Columbus, Ohio, group of roots rockers, give us the feeling that one-night stands can be some of the most beautiful things anyone can ever experience. They don’t need to be justified. It’s good for good’s sake. As a matter of fact, with the amount of tenderness that you hear in lead singer Jon Elliott’s voice and lyrics, you’d swear that these chance meeting and these intimate, naked rolls in the hay were the right way to do these things and that there’s a special kind of appreciation given to these sorts of evenings or afternoons where some sweet looks and some uncontrollable urges tap into one another, flying around like demolition derby drivers bracing themselves for the crash that will really get their blood pumping - kinda the reason they drive in these things in the first place. - Daytrotter

It’s no secret that Jack in the Pocket adores Bear in Heaven. Their music is phenomenal, they gave one of the best endings to an interview ever, and they’re three of the nicest dudes around. Here’s a shimmering new track from their upcoming album I Love You, It’s Cool due to drop on April 3. I have NO WORDS for my excitement for this record to come out! NO WORDS.

Wanderlust-inspired photographer, Laila Elizabeth Archuleta, has created a beautiful video that captures the essence of her roaming spirit with clips from her adventures between June of 2001 and January 2012.

Laila states: “There is something about travel that is so vividly ingrained in me. The oscillation of moving vehicles is more soothing than any mother’s hymn could be. Comfort is feeling at home in an instance in which you will very well never be able to return to. There is such severe lack of constants, so ‘let the great world spin.’”

If you’ve been following this blog for some time, Laila’s name may sound familiar. That’s because she shot the stellar photos for our interview with Neon Indian back in 2010.

Fort Wilson Riot - For All The Little Things

Many, many great bands have sprouted from the seeds of romance. For example, The White Stripes, Arcade Fire, Mates of State, John Lennon and the Plastic Ono Band are just a few! I’ll be so bold as to add Fort Wilson Riot to that list. What a magical musical couple these two make! Minneapolis’ Amy Hager and Jacob Mullis craft intimate and aggressive avant-garde tunes that tug at heartstrings and fill you with an uncontrollable urge let your appendages flail in a wild dance. Amy’s sultry singing mix with Jacobs gruff vocals and combine with synths, drum machine, driving guitar, and even some trumpet. The couple is constantly touring, making frequent stops in Columbus, OH to play with their good friends The Town Monster. They’ll be announcing more dates very soon.

Pick up a copy of Generation Complex, Fort Wilson Riot’s split EP with Phantom Tails. If you’re like me, you won’t be able to stop listening (or dancing).

Dog Bite - Prettiest Pills
BRAND SPANKIN’ NEW! Check out...

BRAND SPANKIN’ NEW! Check out this fresh slice of chill pie from Dog Bite! The mastermind behind this audio awesomness is Atlanta, Georgia’s very own Phil Jones. This guy is a wave wizard. He plays synth, some percussion and back-up vocals for Washed Out’s band. I had the pleasure of meeting him when I interviewed Ernest Greene last year.

If this is any indication, it looks as if we should expect great things from music in 2012.

I posted about Dog Bite’s track Machino Machino on my old blog a few months before it closed, so incase you missed it, HeadUnderwater reblogged.

Just heard some exciting news: Chilled-out ambient rockers Alberto Hernandez and Sean Moore, aka Viernes, are back in the studio! Saw the above photo on my instagram feed and squeaked with excitement! I fell in love with their debut album Sinister Devices as soon as I laid ears on it during the summer of 2010. This track is one of my absolute favorites from that release. Can’t wait for more! Mmmm, just look at that violin being bowed… delightful sounds await, I’m sure.

Grab a copy of Sinister Devices and read more about Viernes via Kanine Records.

What better way to kick of a new year of blogging than with a new track from Columbus, OH band Way Yes? These guys have been making waves in Cbus since they stormed the local music scene wielding drumsticks, synths, guitars and songs about Spicy Ice Cream. Now signed to Lefse Records, Way Yes is set to release their new record Walkability this March.

Happy New Year, y’all!
