Portland’s Sam Adams' stunning EP, Draw This Bitter Blood, sheds light on his personal struggles with religion and relationships. He surrounds his confessions with complicated tempos marked by driving percussion. Fuzzed out synths snake in and out of progressive guitar phrases to create moods that shift from a dark anxiety to climbing confidence. To top it off, his voice sounds remarkably like an Andrew Bird/Jeff Buckley vocal hybrid. The whole of the EP is honest, elegant and intricate.
