GPOY: So much love for Doldrums!

I have been suffering from a very severe case of wanderlust.  So, to temporarily relieve the travel bug, I drove from Columbus to Nashville and Memphis, Tennessee this past weekend. It just so happened that Bear in Heaven, Doldrums, and Blouse were performing in both cities, so I was thrilled to meet up with them again!

Doldrums played a lot of new tracks at the show at Hi-Tone in Memphis on Sunday. Check out my new fave, EGYPT, below, off of their upcoming 12” release. It’s fantastically funky and fresh! Pre-order through Souterrain Transmission before it drops on June 4 here

The picture above is of Airrick Woodhead (Doldrums) and I outside of the Hi-Tone Cafe just after we danced our faces off, hence the huge smiles and glowing skin.

Lovedrug - Dinosaur

Tired of fighting through some gnarly music industry red tape, Ohio band Lovedrug decided to take matters into their own hands and moved from Akron and Columbus to Nashville, TN approximately one year ago.

In March of 2010 Lovedrug began to independently release chapters of (+/-), a three part EP. That November, they announced a fan driven initiative in partnership with PledgeMusic to raise funds needed to record and release their fourth full length album. Over a period of  a few weeks they were able to meet and exceed their goal.

Fast forward to March 6 of this year; these four handsome brutes celebrated the release of Wild Blood, their fourth album, and first full length in 4 years.  The album stays true to their alt-grunge roots everyone fell in love with back in 2002.  Wild Blood rings with a bright tone of cautious optimism versus lead singer Michael Shepard’s early days writing brooding lyrics laced with manic angst.  Seems like these guys have really embraced the contagious creative energy that flows through Nashville and it couldn’t sound better.

Lovedrug

Lovedrug makes their highly anticipated return to the Columbus stage after almost three years, this Saturday, April 7 at Rumba Cafe.

JACK heads to NASHVILLE and MEMPHIS

Heading to Memphis, TN this weekend and stopping in Nashville on the way.  I definitely want to spend some more time digging through the record stores this time through. If any of you have recommendations of where I should stop, shoot me a message or reply to this post. I took this photo at Goner Records when I was in Memphis last September.  I’ll most definitely be stopping there again.

Elvis is King.

PS: If you happen to live in Memphis, or plan to visit soon, check out the great theatre going on at Playhouse on the Square.  I’ll be seeing fellow tumblr blogger and best friend Kelsey Hopkins as Natalie in the musical Next To Normal this Saturday.
