Here We Go Magic - Make Up Your Mind
Here We Go Magic has one of those confounding band names that may seem silly to some. Then, when you spend some time with their music, you begin to understand. It’s the tingle of excitement, the flood of associated memories, and the way their albums stretch your brain that make you think, Here we go… it is magic! I dare you to don a set of high quality headphones, play their debut self-titled album and not notice the how each ethereal layer weaves itself so intricately with the others (Listen to Tunnelvision from Here We Go Magic). Each time I play their sophomore release, Pigeons, I notice a layer or a lyric I had somehow missed before (Listen to Casual from Pigeons). This quartet, led by Luke Temple, really do craft magical melodies. This track from their upcoming 3rd full length album, A Different Ship, is just a taste of more magic to come.
Here We Go Magic's LP, A Different Ship, will hit stores on May 8th. They haven’t set a full tour schedule yet, however, they will play The Knitting Factory in Brooklyn on April 26 to celebrate A Different Ship's release. See a full list of dates here.
KAUF - Relocate
If you were a stripper… and a hipster… what would you dance to while expertly balancing your large framed RayBan spectacles on your nose as you slide up and down the pole? This thought crossed my mind about a year ago while listening to some sexy songs on my iPod. If I were an erotic dancer, I sure as hell would not dance to songs like Pour Some Sugar on Me, Dangerzone, etc. So… why not create a mix chock full of songs that would perfectly accompany a hipster strip-tease? The tracks obviously have to have a steady, sultry, bass heavy beat. Lyrics wanton and mysterious… The artist still a treasure to be discovered.
This track from LA’s KAUF surely meets the criteria. I dare you not to sway your hips as this song takes over your ears. Don’t miss his other sexy electro jam When You’re Out.
Look for a special mix from Jack in the Pocket on Valentine’s Day. ;)
Other Lives - Tamer Animals
After a very successful tour with Bon Iver, Other Lives has secured the coveted role of opening for the North American tour of Radiohead. Their beautiful, haunting music is, as Filter so perfectly states, “perfect for waking up on a crisp fall Sunday or executing a heartrending breakup in the middle of the night.” I’ll pair their album "tamer animals" with a hot cup of tea, a cozy sweater, and a solemn novel this weekend.
Columbus, Other Lives will perform at The Basement on February 11!
Night Beats - Puppet on a String
Night Beats craft fuzzed out psychedelia reminiscent of the greats from the 60’s and 70’s… The Seeds, 13th Floor Elevators (sans jug). The scruffy Seattle trio share a record label with fellow garage punkers Mikal Cronin and Ty Segall. Sound good, yeah? Then, grab their self-titled debut album, don your best leather jacket, black sunglasses, combat boots, light a cigarette, and curl your lips like Elvis.
Columbus! Night Beats perform at Ace of Cups on March 29th!
